Parent-mediated intervention reduced screen time and improved sleep in children with borderline IQ
A randomized controlled trial of 60 children with borderline intellectual functioning found that a parent-mediated screen time usage module delivered in three online sessions significantly reduced screen time, improved sleep quality, and reduced behavioral difficulties compared to standard care.
Excessive screen time in children is a growing concern, particularly among those with borderline intellectual functioning, where it may worsen developmental challenges. Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial with 60 children aged 4–12 years with borderline IQ recruited from a child psychiatry outpatient department in North India.
The intervention group received three 50–60 minute online sessions teaching parents about adverse effects of excess screen time, general regulation guidelines, technological management tools, and behavioral strategies. Outcomes were measured 6 weeks post-intervention using a 24-hour screen time diary, the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and a standardized physical activity questionnaire. The intervention group showed significant reductions in screen time (η²=0.4, a large effect size), improvements in physical activity (η²=0.2), enhancements in sleep quality (η²=0.3), and reductions in behavioral difficulties (η²=0.2), all compared to controls. A key limitation is the short 6-week follow-up period, which leaves uncertain whether benefits persist long-term. The findings suggest that parent-focused behavioral interventions may help manage screen time in vulnerable pediatric populations.
The effect sizes tell an important story: screen time reduction showed the largest effect (η²=0.4), suggesting the intervention was particularly potent at changing this behavior. Sleep quality improvements (η²=0.3) and behavioral difficulties reductions (η²=0.2) followed, indicating downstream benefits. The study used objective measurement (24-hour diary) rather than parent recall alone, strengthening credibility. Notably, physical activity also improved significantly (η²=0.2), suggesting the intervention didn't just move screen time to passive alternatives but encouraged active behaviors. However, the study was conducted over only 8 weeks total (intervention plus 6-week follow-up), so sustainability remains unmeasured—we don't know if families maintained gains at 3 or 6 months. Additionally, the sample was drawn from a tertiary psychiatric outpatient clinic, which may not represent children with borderline IQ in community settings, and the study was conducted in North India, limiting generalizability.
