Short sleep duration linked to higher hypertension risk in women
A meta-analysis of 12 cohort studies found that women who sleep less than their needs show a 10% higher relative risk of developing hypertension, with the lowest risk observed around 7.5 hours per night.
Researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 12 cohort studies from 10 articles (published through March 2024) examining the relationship between sleep duration and hypertension risk in women. The analysis combined data using relative risk (RR) as the effect measure, calculated across multiple international databases including PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library.
Inadequate sleep duration was associated with a significantly higher risk of hypertension: women sleeping insufficient hours showed a relative risk of 1.10 (95% CI: 1.06–1.13), meaning a 10% increased risk compared to adequate sleepers—a statistically significant finding (p <0.001). In contrast, long sleep duration was not associated with hypertension risk (RR: 1.00, 95% CI: 0.96–1.05). The dose-response relationship was L-shaped: using 4 hours per day as reference, hypertension risk was lowest at approximately 7.5 hours per night. Both age groups—women under 50 (RR = 1.19) and those 50 and older (RR = 1.06)—showed elevated hypertension risk with short sleep, though the effect was stronger in younger women. A major limitation is that sleep duration definitions varied across studies, which was identified as a principal source of heterogeneity in the analysis.
