Yoga breathing exercise linked to lower stress and better sleep in women undergoing chemotherapy
A randomized controlled trial of 60 women with stage II-III breast cancer found that practicing 4-4-4-4 yoga breathing twice daily for 21 days significantly reduced perceived stress and improved sleep quality compared with sham breathing.
Researchers at a university hospital in Türkiye randomized 60 women with stage II-III breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy into two groups: one practicing 4-4-4-4 yoga breathing (equal inhale, hold, exhale, hold counts) twice daily for five minutes over 21 days, and a control group receiving sham breathing exercises. Both groups continued standard oncology care.
Perceived stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale and sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index at baseline and after 21 days. The yoga breathing group showed a mean reduction in perceived stress of 6.23 points (p < 0.001) and improved sleep quality by 2.1 points (p < 0.001) compared with the sham group. No adverse events were reported in either group.
