Andropause education linked to better sleep and health in retired men
A randomized trial of 60 retired men found that a four-week virtual health education program addressing andropause—a condition marked by declining testosterone—was associated with significant improvements in both general health and sleep quality, while a control group saw no change.
Andropause, characterized by declining testosterone in aging men, has been linked to declines in both overall health and sleep quality. Researchers at Neyshabur University of Medical Sciences in Iran tested whether targeted education could help.
In this quasi-experimental trial conducted from October 2022 to March 2024, 60 retired male employees were randomly assigned to either a four-week virtual training program delivered via WhatsApp (n=30) or standard care (n=30). The intervention group received structured lessons on andropause management; the control group did not. At baseline, the groups were matched on demographic characteristics (P > 0.05). After four weeks and again at two months, both groups completed validated questionnaires measuring general health (General Health Questionnaire) and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). The intervention group showed a statistically significant improvement in general health (P < 0.001) with a moderate effect size (η² = 0.232), while controls remained unchanged (P = 0.834). Sleep quality also improved in the intervention group (P = 0.002), though the effect was smaller (η² = 0.087). One limitation: the study relied on self-reported questionnaires and lasted only two months after the intervention ended, so longer-term retention of benefits is unclear. The researchers conclude that virtual WhatsApp-based education may be a practical, scalable tool for improving health outcomes in aging men.
The study measured changes across multiple timepoints—baseline, immediately post-intervention, and two months later—using repeated-measures ANOVA. Time itself had a significant effect on general health (P < 0.001, η² = 0.232), and the interaction of time and group assignment (P < 0.001, η² = 0.226) confirmed that the intervention group's improvement was distinct from control-group trajectories. For sleep quality, the time effect (P = 0.011, η² = 0.087) and group effect (P = 0.006, η² = 0.123) were both significant but smaller in magnitude. The education covered andropause symptoms (mood, fatigue, sexual function, sleep disruption) and evidence-based coping strategies. One nuance: the study does not specify which elements of the four-week program drove the largest gains, so it is unclear whether the benefits came from information alone, the social accountability of group messaging, or the structured contact. Recruitment was via stratified quota sampling at a single Iranian university, which may limit generalizability to other retirement populations or settings. No long-term follow-up data exist beyond two months.
