Mobile VR mindfulness app linked to reduced stress and anxiety in young adults
A pilot randomized controlled trial of 70 young adults (mean age 23) found that an 8-week mobile virtual reality mindfulness program with coaching reduced perceived stress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms compared to no intervention.
Young adults aged 18–29 reported disproportionately high stress levels and often avoid traditional stress management methods due to perceived ineffectiveness, inconvenience, or stigma. Researchers tested MindCo Relief, a mobile VR-based stress management app paired with online coaching, in a pilot randomized controlled trial with 70 participants (mean age 23 years, 74% female, 66% students) who had moderate-to-high baseline stress (Perceived Stress Scale-10 score ≥14).
The intervention group (n=34) completed an 8-week VR mindfulness program with in-person coaching access, while the control group (n=36) received no intervention. Linear mixed-effects models showed the VR group experienced significantly greater reductions in perceived stress (β=−3.84, P=.007), anxiety (β=−3.21, P=.002), and depressive symptoms (β=−3.13, P=.007), and greater increases in quality of life (β=9.99, P=.001) compared to controls. No significant difference was found for resilience (P=.06). A notable limitation is that neither the percentage of modules completed nor the number of coaching sessions attended predicted outcome improvements, suggesting the mechanism of benefit remains unclear. The authors acknowledge this is a small, predominantly female pilot study requiring larger, more diverse samples and longer follow-up to establish durability.
The effect sizes were clinically meaningful: stress scores dropped approximately 3.8 points on the PSS-10 (on a 0–40 scale), anxiety fell ~3.2 points on the GAD-7, and depressive symptoms declined ~3.1 points on the PHQ-9. Quality of life improved by ~10 points on the General Well-Being Schedule. Notably, both high and low adherers benefited similarly—module completion rates and coaching attendance did not predict better outcomes, which is puzzling. This suggests the immersive VR environment itself, rather than amount of engagement or coaching intensity, may drive the benefit. The study design was rigorous for a pilot (randomized, baseline-matched groups, validated outcome scales), but the sample was small, skewed female, and college-educated—limiting generalizability to older, more diverse populations. Longer follow-up (beyond 8 weeks) and larger trials are needed to determine if benefits persist and whether VR outperforms simpler, lower-cost stress tools.
