Daytime light supplementation linked to better sleep and activity patterns in older adults
A randomized trial of 202 adults aged 63–92 in Amsterdam, Bologna, and Tartu found that 12 weeks of self-administered indoor light supplementation (>8000 melanopic EDI) was associated with improved daytime activity, consolidated wakefulness, and subjective sleep quality.
Controlled laboratory studies have shown that light supplementation can improve circadian alignment, sleep, and mood, but translating these benefits to real-world settings remains difficult because light exposure depends on personal habits and indoor versus outdoor environment. Older adults face a particular challenge: natural age-related decline in eye sensitivity to light combines with reduced daytime exposure from spending time indoors in urban homes.
Researchers recruited 202 participants (aged 63–92; 139 women) across three European cities at different latitudes (Amsterdam, Bologna, Tartu) and randomized them to either 12 weeks of self-directed indoor light supplementation using a lamp (>8000 melanopic EDI, n=98) or control. Greater naturalistic light exposure was linked to increased daytime activity, more consolidated sleep, better subjective sleep quality, and lower incidence of metabolic disorders. Notably, participants with lower baseline light exposure initiated supplementation earlier and sustained it longer across seasons, and when supplementation began before 10:00 AM, it was associated with greater daytime activity and lower fragmentation of rest-activity patterns. This simple, accessible, non-pharmacological intervention required only a lamp in the most frequently used room and showed broad potential to support healthy ageing in urban environments.
The trial revealed important nuances beyond the headline: individuals self-regulated light supplementation based on their baseline light exposure—those with lower naturalistic light exposure not only started earlier but persisted longer, suggesting the body's own signals drive adherence. The timing window proved critical: supplementation onset before 10:00 AM correlated with greater daytime activity and smoother rest-activity rhythms, whereas later-day use did not show the same benefit. Secondary analyses showed greater naturalistic light exposure was associated with reduced metabolic disorder incidence, hinting at a link between circadian entrainment and metabolic health. Baseline reduced ocular sensitivity in older adults (a normal age-related change) meant that the high-intensity supplementation dose (>8000 melanopic EDI) was necessary to achieve benefit—standard household lighting would not suffice. The sample was predominantly female (69%) and urban-dwelling across three latitudes, which may limit generalizability to rural settings or male-majority populations.
