Urban green space qualities linked to physical activity in older adults
A systematic review of nine studies found that presence, size, and trail infrastructure in urban parks showed positive associations with physical activity among older adults, though findings were inconsistent across studies.
Regular physical activity is essential for healthy aging, and urban green spaces (UGS) may help older adults meet activity targets. Researchers systematically reviewed nine quantitative studies published 2016–2024 from Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Australia to examine how availability, accessibility, and attractiveness of parks associated with physical activity in people aged 45 and over.
For availability, the presence and size of UGS were positively linked to older adults' PA in several studies, whereas proximity to parks showed inconsistent associations. On accessibility, infrastructure features such as trail length were positively associated with PA, but findings for general park features and perceived safety were mixed. Attractiveness findings were also variable: some land-cover and amenity features (such as water features or seating) correlated with more activity, while others showed no clear relationship. A major limitation was substantial heterogeneity across studies—they used different age cutoffs (45+ versus 65+), varying definitions of UGS quality, different PA measures (device-measured versus self-reported), and uneven study rigor, making it difficult to draw firm conclusions about which green space qualities matter most.
The review found that park size and trail infrastructure—specifically longer, well-maintained walking paths—showed the strongest positive associations with older adults' activity levels across multiple studies. Interestingly, mere proximity to parks did not reliably predict whether older adults actually used them, suggesting that simply living near a park is not enough; the park must offer usable features. Perceived safety, park amenities (like seating, shade, and water access), and landscape beauty had mixed relationships with activity, indicating these factors may matter differently for different individuals or contexts. The authors note that studies measured physical activity in wildly different ways—some used wearable devices, others asked participants, and still others used administrative data—making it hard to compare effect sizes. The heterogeneity also reflected differences in which older adults were studied (people aged 45+ versus 65+) and whether they lived in dense urban cores versus suburban areas, hinting that green space design may need tailoring by setting.
