Oat β-glucan, rice bran, and unripe banana flour show modest improvements in glucose and cholesterol

A systematic review of 15 studies found that three types of dietary fiber — oat β-glucan, rice bran, and unripe banana flour — each improved different metabolic markers in adults, though effects were modest and varied by fiber type.

Dietary fiber is known to support metabolic health, but which specific fiber sources work best remains unclear. Researchers conducted a systematic review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, searching PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science through June 2025.

After screening 602 records and assessing 44 full texts, they included 15 studies examining oat β-glucan, rice bran, or unripe banana flour in adults. Study sample sizes ranged from 10 to 154 participants, with intervention durations from 3 days to 12 weeks. Oat β-glucan consistently lowered postprandial (after-meal) glucose and insulin area-under-the-curve, and reduced LDL cholesterol, with modest effects on waist circumference and blood pressure. Rice bran improved blood lipid profiles consistently, though its effects on glucose were mixed. Unripe banana flour, which is rich in resistant starch, was associated with lower fasting glucose, lower HOMA-IR (an insulin-resistance marker), and reduced body weight — but these findings come from small, short-duration trials. The review notes significant variability in dosing and formulations across studies, and limited mechanistic research, which restricted firm conclusions about how these fibers compare directly.

The review identified critical gaps: most trials lasted only weeks, not months; dosing ranged widely (often 3–12 g/day) without standardization; and few studies measured SCFA production, incretin hormones, or bile acid signaling, which are central to understanding how fiber truly reshapes metabolism. Responsiveness also differed between individuals, hinting that genetics, gut microbiota composition, or baseline metabolic state may determine who benefits most. The heterogeneity limits any definitive ranking of the three sources.
